Happy Batman Day! Hug Your Cat Day is also celebrated on May 1st and, while neither are considered national holidays, I highly recommend both.
May is a month for nerds / geeks, and a special season in my area due to Star Wars and Free Comic Book Day celebrations.
Star Wars fans enjoy three days of merrymaking beginning on Intergalactic Star Wars Day - May the Fourth Be With You! If Revenge of the Fifth and Space Day aren't in your wheelhouse, you might enjoy celebrating Cinco de Mayo instead.
Free Comic Book Day - celebrated on the 1st Saturday of May - occurs this year on May 6th. Comic shops often hold events on Friday and Saturday, including trivia, raffles, local artists & writers, cosplayers, and themed food / beverages. Support your local shops!
I've attended FCBD events every year since they began in 2002. It is always a thrill to see the turnout of folks - especially people who are trying comics for the first time. Read what you enjoy!

Get whimsical with your writing on May 12th for Limerick Day, but avoid the naughty ones on May 14th (both Decency Day and Mother's Day). [The punctuation for this holiday always throws me; I want to write Mothers' Day, but the true punctuation is Mother's Day as each person focuses on their specific Mother.]
Don't forget Memorial Day on May 29th. Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for honoring and mourning the U.S. military personnel who have died while serving in the United States armed forces. It is observed on the last Monday of May.
